About

Kagemann_Headshot 001I am Derek Kagemann, a freelance author living in Southern Indiana with my wife and two children.

I write deeply philosophical musings about post-apocalyptic nursing homes. I’ve worked short stints doing exciting things, like being a Wild West cowboy, a movie extra, publishing a magazine, and singing in a band, but the long haul has been devoted to caring for my family.

My wife and I dropped everything, abandoning her growing business and my nascent writing career, when our medically fragile daughter was born. Our lives have been further complicated by my wife’s worsening trigeminal neuralgia and associated conditions, which eventually left her bedridden, and my own struggles with bipolar II disorder (Is this where I ask for money?). I struggle to balance writing with my responsibilities as a caretaker, but it is a role that lends me perspective and inspires me to pick up the pen. Let none of that eclipse how proud I am of my son and his accomplishments.

This blog is meant to help me stay on track and keep connected with my friends, family, and anyone I haven’t alienated with my Twitter account. I have experience as an editor, writing coach, and group coordinator if you are seeking professional help with a project. This page is moderated, so inquiries and contact information may be posted here without them becoming publicly visible.
